HAIR AND BEAUTY SERVICES
When it comes to hairdressers or barbers, it's always
best—no matter where you live—to ask your friends for
recommendations. You can start off by shopping around.
Look into the windows of coiffeurs and see which are busy
and what kind of clientele they serve. Hair salon chains offer
reliable services, as do the hotels and department stores,
often charging less than the small neighbourhood coiffeurs —a
source of increasing consternation among the independent
operators. Although a shampooing et brushing (wash and blow-
dry) or a coupe (cut) at the chains may cost less, the quality
varies according to the stylist—as is the case anywhere—and
turnover of stylists tends to be higher than in neighbourhood
salons. Salons have their prices posted in the windows.
If you use hair dye, bring a few bottles with you until you
find a comparable colour, as brands and colours are not
the same as what is found at home. Tips are not included
in the price, and everyone who attends to you—shampoo
person, hair stylist, cloakroom attendant—gets a tip based
on the level of service. Most shops close on Mondays. Get
recommendations from your friends, see Paris Par Cher or
Coiffeurs in the Yellow Pages . The chains listed below are well
known and reliable—depending, of course, on the expertise
