COMPUTERS
Although ordinateurs (computers), imprimantes (printers) and
associated informatique (IT) products have traditionally been
expensive, prices are now more competitive—at least in the
new megastores and the hypermarchés in the nearby surburbs
and along the périphérique . Prices vary somewhat from store
to store, so it pays to shop around. Check magazines such
as PC Direct at news-stands for prices. To locate shops, see
Informatique and Micro-informatique (vente-maintenance) in
the Yellow Pages .
Several chains sell small electronic goods, computers,
logiciels (software) and associated items. Fnac and Virgin
Megastore carry everything hi-tech, including computers,
software and accessories. Software is, of course, in French; if
you need software in other languages, bring your own. Think
also of the keyboard, for the French clavier (keyboard) does
not use the Qwerty format; you can change the language of
your system, but the actual keyboard remains the same.
If you bring your own computer to France, bring proof
of purchase with the serial numbers of the computer (or
printer) just in case customs officers ask you to prove that
the equipment is yours.
La Fnac; tel: 01.53.10.44.44; website: http://www.fnac.com.

computers, peripherals, software and books. Fnac Digitale
at 77-81 boulevard Saint-Germain, 75006 specialises
in high-tech products of all sorts: computers, printers,
software, personal organisers, etc.
