Discount/Second-Hand Clothes
Paris swarms with discount clothing shops, which are
extremely popular with Parisians. There are several types:
some shops sell new but out-of-season designer clothes,
while others, known as dégriffé , sell clothes with the labels
taken out or mutilated. The dépôts-vente (consignment
shops) sell slightly used clothes of fashionable ladies who
may have worn them only once. Look out too for shops
that advertise vêtements d'occasion (second-hand clothes)
or have the word ' troc ' in their names (this could mean
that clothes may be exchanged for others after inspection
by the shops). Fripe means the shop specialises in retro
clothes, while solderies refers to shops where there is a
permanent sale.
Some designers maintain discount shops for their out-
of-season designs. If the word ' stock ' is in the name, it
means the shop sells new clothes from a designer or factory.
(Designers often contribute overstock to the crowded
biannual braderies , or jumble sales at the Porte de Versailles.)
