Tennis
There are some 44 public tennis centres in Paris with more
than 170 courts. To join the public system, residents must
obtain the Carte Paris-Sports , with an identification number
to use when reserving a court. Applications may be obtained
from tennis centres or your mairie . The card takes about four
weeks to process (info tel: 01.47.43.48.00; website: http://
www.fft.fr). Bring identification and two photos.
Courts are always crowded. Reserve them in advance
online (http://www.tennis.paris.fr). Charges are by the hour
and are reasonable. It costs more to play in the evening
when the courts are lit. You can also join tennis clubs,
which themselves have arrangements with courts around
the city. See Tennis courts et leçons in the Yellow Pages and
Tennis in the White Pages . The French Open (known in
France as Roland-Garros) begins in the last week of May at
Stade Roland-Garros. The Paris Open takes place at Bercy
in November. Tickets are difficult to obtain except for
early rounds.
For information and inquiries regarding membership
in private clubs, call the Fédération Française de Tennis at
Stade Roland-Garros, 2 avenue Gordon-Bennet, 75016 (tel:
