In-Depth Information
Running
Parisians do not often practise le footing (jogging) around
city streets, for traffic and pollution can be unpleasant, but
people do jog along the quais with their broad sidewalks
and lovely views. Many runners head for the Bois de
Boulogne and its 35-km paths that wind through meadows
and around lakes; or to the Bois de Vincennes and its outer
circuit of almost 11 km or inner circuit of 8 km. In the city
centre, people run in the Tuileries, the Champ-de-Mars, Parc
Monceau, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, Parc de Montsouris
and the Jardin du Luxembourg.
Some 24 of the city's centres sportifs (sports centres) have
running tracks; eight are indoors. Buy a subscription ticket,
which allows entrance to the track, showers and locker rooms.
Tracks are closed to the public when schools or the organised
running clubs have reserved them.
Bicycling
Bicycling is a popular sport and there are clubs and special
events for cyclists. If you don't have a bike of your own, you can
rent one, although buying one second-hand is not expensive.
For rentals, see Location de cycles, motos et scooters in the
Yellow Pages . For detailed information on cycling, contact the
Fédération Française de Cyclisme at 5 rue de Rome, 93561
Rosny-sur-Bois Cedex (tel: 01.49.35.69.00; http://www.ffc.
fr). Also, ask at your mairie for Paris à Velo , a booklet which
details everything you need to know about cycling in Paris.
The RATP rents bicycles at its Maison Roue Libre, with
branches at the Bastille and near Les Halles (http://bus38.
online.fr/rouelibreeng.html). It's best to check their website
for current information. The companies listed below both
rent and sell bicycles; the first two also offer city tours. And,
of course, the vélib bicycles are docked all around the city
for short trips.
