In-Depth Information
Actually, if you spent 30 seconds
in front of each piece of art at the
Louvre, 24 hours a day, it would
take you more than seven months
to view it all.
Cernuschi and Musée Cognacq-
Jay. In addition, the national
museums generally have reduced
rates for people over 60 years old
and under 18, and all are free (for
the permanent collections) on the first Sunday of each month.
If you are in Paris for just a short visit (or if you have friends
coming to Paris for a visit), there are three museum passes to
consider: one-day, three consecutive days or five consecutive
days. Passes are sold at museums, monuments, métro stations
and the Paris Tourist Office. City museums are usually closed
on Monday, and national museums are closed on Tuesday.
Do not think that once you've seen the Louvre, the Musée
d'Orsay and the Pompidou, you've seen everything worth
seeing. There are dozens of other spectacular art museums,
as well as science museums, not to mention the new museum
that took years to build—the Musée du Quai Branly, which
specialises in the arts and civilisations of Africa, Oceania
and the Americas. There's also the Musée de la Poupée (Doll
Museum), Musée de la Magie (Museum of Magic) and there's
even a little museum at the apartment where Vladmir Lenin
lived while he was in exile just before the Russian Revolution.
So, given that it could take a month or more just to grasp
the Louvre, there's certainly enough in Paris to edify you for
quite some time.
TICKET PURCHASE
Billets (tickets) to events are sold at the box office about two
weeks in advance, and for some events, up to a month before.
Box offices are generally open for ticket purchase from 11:00
am to 7:00 pm. Most accept telephone reservations although
lines are often busy, and credit cards are accepted. Pick
up tickets at least an hour before the performance, and be
prepared to stand in line when purchasing tickets and picking
them up at the venue before the event.
Major events, however, sell out quickly, especially those
with big-name performers, so buy tickets as early as possible.
It is often best to go well in advance of an event to an agency
that handles cultural, entertainment and sporting events,
