In-Depth Information
Kosher, halal, and other specialty cuisines are plentiful in Paris. This kosher
pizza place is at 11 rue des Rosiers in the Marais.
Sunday mornings. The food halls mentioned on page 213
also have specialty products.
Most supermarkets also carry kosher and halal products,
especially at seasons of religious events. Although the famous
Jo Goldenberg in the Marais has closed, Finkelsztajn's at 27
rue des Rosiers (tel: 42.72.78.91) has good deli products and
probably the best rye bread in the city. Note that the kosher
establishments close on Friday afternoon and open again
Saturday evening or Sunday.
MEAT MARKETS
Meats in France are excellent. French lamb is world-famous,
and beef, pork and veal are all available at the boucherie
(butcher's). Cuts may be unfamiliar to you, but if you describe
to the boucher (butcher) what you want, he can provide it. All
meats except horsemeat are sold at the boucherie .
That few hormones are used in raising cattle means that
the meat may not be particularly tender and will require
longer cooking time or thinner cuts. Meat is not aged very
long, so its texture may be different from what you are used
