In-Depth Information
FISH
A delectable selection of poisson (fish) and fruits de mer
(seafood) is readily available, some of which, such as shrimp,
may be precooked. Fish is sold fresh at supermarkets and at
the poissonnerie (fish market) daily, except on Mondays, and
at outdoor markets and the rues commerçants . The food halls
also have exceptionally good fish every day.
The poissonnier (fishmonger) will price a whole fish by
its weight and clean it too. Fish also comes in fillets or
darnes (steaks), priced by weight by the piece. Almost all
poissonneries make fish soups. In supermarkets, soups and
fish preparations are found in refrigerators near the fish
counters. Inspect the packing and expiration dates on the
packages. See Poissonneries in the Yellow Pages .
Smoked fish and caviar are also popular, and the food
halls mentioned above have the widest variety. Comptoir
du Saumon and Caviar Latian have several addresses. Those
below have excellent selections of caviar, smoked fish
and snails.

SPECIALTY FOODS
Paris abounds with kosher groceries, traiteurs , butchers
and bakeries. Look around rue des Rosiers in the Marais,
especially, and the market street rue Cadet in the 9th
arrondissement. The same is true of halal restaurants and
food stores, which are more found in the northeastern
quartiers, especially around Belleville. Most groceries now
carry organic foods, and there are several bio ( biologique )
shops and a popular bio market on boulevard Raspail on
