popular shops. Supermarkets carry both fresh and packaged
breads. Note also that baguettes are generally not wrapped
but are, instead, handed to the customer with a small paper
square to hold while transporting home.
Pâtisseries specialise in exquisitely decorated gâteaux
(cakes) and tartes (fruit pies or tarts). Some are particularly
known for their elegant creations and there is some overlap
with chocolate shops (see below), such as the elegant multi-
store Lenôtre and Dalloyau.
Each quartier has its boulangeries and pâtisseries , and
although many close in August, at least one bakery in
each neighbourhood stays open. Supermarkets and some
traiteurs also offer well-made desserts, but the food halls
have the most imaginative (and expensive) creations.
Small bakeries generally close for lunch and reopen until
