In-Depth Information
Shops lining market streets present beautifully arranged seasonal produce.
sometimes sparse stock. Most city supermarkets close on
Sunday; some are open on Sunday mornings, depending on
the neighbourhood.
People with cars often head for the banlieue where
gigantic hypermarchés offer a wide selection and low prices;
they also carry electronics and household items. These
include Auchan, Casino, Intermarché and Carrefour, which
has one outlet in the city in the 16 e . Small shopping baskets
are found by the entrance to each supermarket. Wheeled
caddies (carts) may be linked together by a lock, requiring
the insertion of a one euro deposit, which is returned
when the cart is reinserted into the rack. As of this writing,
plastic sacs (bags) are provided. (Some supermarkets
had tried to terminate this service on ecological grounds
but quickly reinstated the service, at least temporarily.)
Others now charge a few cents for the bags. In any case,
expect to bag the groceries yourself. The charge for home
delivery depends on the amount spent. See Supermarchés
et Hypermarchés in the Yellow Pages .
