In-Depth Information
are personal and flirty, even in professional situations.
This does not necessarily mean they are harassing you
sexually. A Frenchman (usually older) who kisses your hand
by brushing it lightly or even just bringing it to his lips is
being gallant, nothing more. Letting a Frenchman take
you to dinner and pay the bill does not necessarily mean a
payoff at the end. On the other hand, young French men
sometimes think they are acting cool when they openly ogle
a pretty woman. If a man persists when told firmly to desist,
women might call out loudly to passersby, “ Il m'aggresse ”,
which means that the man is being too aggressive toward
her, or even call the police (tel: 17).
THE STUDENT LIFE
EU Nationals
Citizens of EU countries may study in any other EU country.
In France, they must be enrolled in an accredited institution,
have health insurance and enough financial wherewithal to
cover their stay in France. EU citizens—including students—
also have the right to work in France (see Chapter Nine).
Upon registering with an institution, the student will receive
an identity card that lasts for the period of study and is
renewable year by year.
EU nationals might inquire about the EU's Education
Programme, Socrates/Erasmus, which encourages student
mobility throughout the community (and in several other
countries as well.) Qualifying students at a participating
institution may study at another such institution for a year.
British students should access the British Council website
(http://www.britishcouncil.org/erasmus).
If you need to learn the language of the country you will
study in, explore the Intensive Language Preparation Courses
(ILPC), a short period of intense language study that takes
place in the host country just before starting the Erasmus
period. For more information on the Socrates/Erasmus
Programme, access the EU website (http://ec.europa.eu/
education/lifelong-learning-programme/doc80_en.htm)
