The Fares
The transit system is divided into zones: Paris falls within
Zone 1 and the inner suburbs are in Zone 2. The rest—up
to Zone 9—encompass the outer zones and airports. Single
fare tickets are available, but a
carnet
of ten tickets costs
about a third less per ticket. A ticket is good for one ride
of any length on one bus within the city limits and for
any number of transfers within the
métro
, so long as you
do not exit the gates. There are no single-ticket transfers
from bus to bus, or bus to the
métro
. Keep your ticket
while in the system, for you will have to show it if asked
by an inspector.
Métro
tickets and coupons are inserted
into a slot and then reclaimed, at which point the entry
gate opens. On the bus, tickets must be
validé
(validated)
in the
valideur magnétique
behind the driver.
Visitors should inquire about the Paris Visite travel pass,
which is issued for one, two, three or five consecutive days,
and is valid on all public transportation, including the SNCF
trains. The passes, sold by zones, are valid throughout
the Île de France, meaning visits to Versailles or to either
airport. Buy them at
métro
and train stations.
The Passes
Weekly or monthly passes (
coupons
) are more economical
than single-ride tickets. The
carte navigo intégrale
is an
electromagnetic card that is valid throughout Île-de-France
on all forms of public transport and allows users to get
through the turnstiles quickly, for it is swiped along an
electronic
valideur
.
You may recharge the weekly pass (
hebdomadaire
) or
monthly pass (
mensuel
) at
métro
stations. The
hebdomadaire
starts from Monday to Sunday, no matter which day of the
week it was bought. The monthly recharge is good for the
