Imported televisions and DVD/
magnétoscopes
(DVD/
videocassette recorders) must operate on PAL/SECAM, the
French television broadcast format. Older video players
run only on SECAM, making them incompatible with the
American system (NTSC), although they are compatible
with the European PAL system. Multisystem televisions
and VCRs are increasingly available. In order to tape and
play the
magnétoscope
, the television set and the recorder
must be compatible. There is a
redevance
(yearly tax) on
television sets. When a set is purchased, the store notifies
the tax authority and the bill comes with the annual bill for
the
taxe d'habitation
.
DVD
As with video recorders, DVD players in different world
regions run on different operating systems. DVD players
bought in North America, for example, can only play DVDs
that are labelled either 'Zone 1' or 'All' ('All' means they are
playable on any DVD player). European DVDs are Zone 2,
and DVDs bought in Europe generally say 'Zone 2' or 'All'.
Sometimes a shopkeeper will be willing to enter a code
into a DVD player making it multi-region and thus able to
play all DVDs. This may, however, void the warranty, should
anything go wrong.
