Public Phones
Public telephones can be found in post offices, public
buildings, restaurants and on the street. Few telephones take
coins; all take the télécarte —a prepaid card to be inserted
into the telephone. Credits are deducted according to the
length of the call and the number of units remaining on the
card appears on the telephone as you speak. Télécartes are
available at supermarkets and tabacs . Calls to emergency
numbers are free from any public telephone. For operator
assistance, dial 1812.
The French Internet
Currently there are dozens of Internet fournisseurs d'accès
(providers) in France. New providers are entering the field
and prices vary widely, so it is worth checking out the price
structures and conveniences of several. If you continue to
use your own Internet service provider, you will still need to
be able to access it, whether by telephone or cable, so you
will need to know the options in France.
You will have many options to choose from, including
Wi-Fi, broadband ASDL ( haut debit ) and cable, which in Paris
is provided by Numericable.
Some charge a monthly fee for unlimited access ( forfait
illimité ) and many have a scale of fees, depending on your
usage. As mentioned above, some offer calling, and television
packages as well, so take into account all the options before
you decide.
All software and instructions provided will be in French,
as will most technical support.
