In-Depth Information
E101 form indicating insurance coverage under the UK
plan. If employed by a French company, the worker will
receive a French Social Security number and be covered by the
French system.
Accounting Firms
Your country's embassy should be able to provide a list of
English-speaking tax consultants in Paris. International firms
are up-to-date on both French and international tax laws
and procedures, as well as the treaties between countries.
They offer tax preparation advice, help prepare returns,
handle audits and offer business-related services. They may,
however, be more expensive than French accountants for
dealing with strictly domestic matters.
STAYING IN TOUCH
New methods of communication are entering modern life
so quickly—even in 'ancient, traditional' France—that any
chapter on how best to stay in touch with friends and family
abroad will need to be updated by the time it's printed. With
phones that take photographs which can be emailed directly,
or hand-held devices that receive wireless email wherever
you are, there's no need anymore to wonder how people
back home are and to wait uneasily to find out. No doubt new
technology will continue to emerge to make staying in touch
even easier, faster and cheaper. If France has not been on the
cutting edge of communications so far, at least it never lets
itself fall behind.
La Téléphonie
Until recently, France Télécom controlled all tele-
communications services. However, its privatisation, as
well as new regulations from the EU, has allowed both
domestic and international competitors to enter the field.
This has forced France Télécom to adapt, which it has by
morphing into Orange, by reducing prices and expanding
its calling options, and by providing competitive services in
both Internet and television programming. (See the box on
the next page for contact information.)
