example, most merchants rounded up the fractions of their
local currency to the next higher euro, but others seized
the opportunity to raise prices freely. There are also other
factors to consider: for example, an Italian car may cost
more in Germany than in Italy, so if you want an Italian car
you may well decide to go to Italy and drive it back across
the open border. Therefore, you still have to shop around for
the best deal on high-priced items. Such pricing differences
are currently being discussed within the EU.
Currency values do fluctuate greatly outside the euro
zone, even for the three EU countries that opted not to enter
the monetary convention and for the 10 new members.
Thus, if you know in advance when you will be travelling
outside the euro zone, you still have to pay attention to
currency rates and buy when it is advantageous. Rates are
published in daily newspapers; unfortunately, these are
bank rates and individual purchasers do not get exactly
the same rates.
