There is at least one commercial France Télécom office
in each district that handles telephone matters for that
area, including bill payment, sales and rental of equipment
and subscription to new services. Telephones must be
registered in the leaseholder's name. To obtain service,
telephones, and telephone books, bring identification and
proof of domicile. Call customer service for information and
installation of telephones.

mail service, as well as

(unlisted number).
Telephone bills are sent bimonthly and are usually
deducted automatically from your French current account
(
compte courant
). An itemised bill (
facture détaillée
) will be
sent to you in advance of the date the amount is deducted
from your account, giving you time to dispute the bill, if
needed. Otherwise, if bills are not paid on time, it is routine
for the service to be cut off and a 10 per cent fine levied
for reinstatement.

(telephone books) are usually
distributed in May. They are left in the entrance hall of
apartment buildings for the tenants to take.

listings and display advertising by category, and within
each category, by

Internet Hookup and Cable Television
To hook up to the Internet, no matter who the provider
is, you will need either a telephone or a cable connection.
For a telephone connection, ask France Télécom when
ordering your telephone service, or with the provider you
choose. (See page 149.) For a cable connection, contact
Numericable, which is also the cable television company
