Estimating mortality. For ascarisiasis, deaths are mainly due to
intestinal obstruction, and to a lesser extent biliary or pancreatic
disease. 5 Such acute complications are seen largely in children less
than 10 years of age. 5 Each of the GBD studies employed a statistical
model to estimate deaths by broad cause group, with a number of
methodological refinements included in the 2010 study. The 1990
GBD study attributed 3000 global deaths due to ascariasis, whereas
in the 2010 study 2824 deaths were attributed to ascariasis, with
most deaths
in populations
from East Asia and South Asia
( Table 13.4 ).
