There was nothing like smoking a joint with an eighty-year-old guy. Huncke
would roll a really big joint, and I'd get a sense of what these old guys were all
about.

you'd be at some of these parties, and somebody would take out a joint and light
it up. Immediately, two or three other people would say to themselves, “Well, I
have to share mine too!” So you'd have two or three big fat joints circulating.

I need to catch my breath.”
“Oh!” Huncke would say, with deep sarcasm. “So you can evaluate how
much partying you can do?” Huncke was personally offended that I didn't want
another hit. To him, you had to stand there and do it all!

Herbert loved Dimitri, and I'm sure any friend of Dimitri's was okay by him.
Herbert read to me his short story, “The Evening Sun turned Crimson.” It's
extraordinarily beautiful. Herbert loved women. He was kind of a dandy, and he
was small physically. I guess that's an affinity with women too. But when I think
of Herbert now, that association certainly has to do with heroin.
Not everyone gave Huncke good character references. Especially if they found themselves
at the short end of one of his con jobs.

Herbert was one of the most disingenuous and bitter people I ever met. At one
point, Huncke once ripped me off on a deal. I had given him fifty dollars or a
hundreddollarsforsomethingIthoughtwasgoingtobeequalinvalue,andwhat
he gave me turned out to be worth five or ten dollars. Two days later, he called
back, wanting to know if I wanted more! Huncke had delusions of grandeur. He
ripped everybody off. He thought that just because he was Herbert Huncke, even
being ripped off by him would be flattering.
I don't think there were any people that Stanley Bard actually turned down
when they wanted to move into the Chelsea, unless Stanley had a bad experience
