The Marvelous Missteps of Marlowe West
Mellow Marlowe West—by day the lead singer in the glam metal band Skin Tight, by night
a factory boy at General Dynamics—was making his presence known at the Chelsea in his
own way. He brought humor to the Chelsea, usually at his own expense. After a series of
ridiculous misfortunes, he assumed the mantle of the sacred trickster, the Holy Fool. Holy

style.

Marlowe was the nicest guy you would ever see, but he was always doing
something screwed up. He had these cowboy boots with metal caps on the toes to
makethemlookcool.WellMarlowewashelpingthisladywhohadawholebunch
of groceries to get into the front door of the Chelsea. So he held the door open
with the toe of his boot, and it shattered the window. From then on, Stanley Bard
hated Marlowe.
MARLOWE WEST
I went to buy some groceries and was wearing boots that had these big metal shin
plates that I strapped around my legs. I came to the door of the Chelsea, and all of
the management were sitting there in the lobby having a meeting. In order to open
the automatic front door, they had to push a button inside. I had my arms full of
groceries, and I kept pushing the buzzer and pushing the buzzer, and nobody was
getting up to push the button to open the door for me. I had both arms full of gro-
ceries, so I started knocking on the door by kicking it—kick, kick, kick—as if to
say “Hello! Here Iam.” Andthe doorbroke.Itjust shattered into amillion pieces.
I had to pay five hundred dollars to replace the door. After that, Stanley and
the rest of them just hated me. I told them, “Well, you got a new door out of the
deal!”
Another event was a little more serious. I loved Paul Volmer's roommates
Neicy and Therese. Neicy defined the word voluptuous. Brunette, pouty lips, lots
of body going on, and this childish little giggly voice. She was very cool. I don't
know if she and Paul were actually a couple. Later on, they lived together. I think
she played along with being his girlfriend, but I don't think there was a physical
thing.
So one time I managed to get a date out of Neicy. She had convinced me she
wasn't really Paul's girlfriend, so I didn't feel like I was cheating him out. I had
