The Attack of Dainty Adore
One such individual who may have pushed the “all is permitted” ethic past Bohemian
boundaries was a drag queen named Dainty Adore. The corpulent Dainty dressed up like
Little Bo Peep in a gingham pinafore and a curly blonde wig, and minced around carrying a
parasol and singing opera in falsetto.
And now Dainty had become obsessed with Paul Volmer, who planned to become the
Warhol of his age. Volmer admired Warhol's ability to dispassionately observe the scene he
created, quietly watching whatever insane sex and drug exploits careened around him. As
night watchman, Volmer would run into all sorts of people. Sometimes he'd invite them to
his room, talk to them, interview them about their lives.

I had a very inquiring mind. But I swear, I wish I hadn't been so open to Dainty
Adore. When I did my nightly rounds, Dainty Adore was always in a bathrobe,
sort of waiting for me. Even though he was kind of weird, he was friendly to me
and I would talk to him.
Then later on, I started hearing from people in the hotel that Dainty Adore had

Plus, because Paul was hanging out with Dainty, Dainty would start talking to

“I don't know him!”

one of these periods, I was somewhat depressed, and I guess I told Dainty that
Neicy had left again.
Thenextday,Daintyknockedonmydoor,butIwassodepressedIdidn'twant
totalktoanybody.“Goaway,”Itoldhim.“I'mnotinthemoodtotalkrightnow.”
