The scene at the Chelsea was the remnant of the Warhol scene there. It was very
interactive. You were in this many-roomed hotel with many different artists and
typesofpeople.Justhangingoutwithyourfriendsintheroomsandtalkingabout
art and writing. I loved to talk about literature. People would bring tapes of their
musicovertoplayforyou,someonemightbringtheirpaintingforyoutolookat,
and they were excited that they accomplished it. Or if they couldn't get anything
going, they were depressed about it, and at least they had someone to talk to.
And now with Marlowe's interior decor upgrades, the salon had Bohemian-style glamor.

Just before I left California, there had been a sale at Paramount Studios, and a
friend of mine bought these great big cardboard barrels filled with glitter, one
goldandonesilver.SoItookabagfulofeachbacktoNewYorkwithme,andon
Friday nights we would sit on the balcony and throw glitter down on all sorts of
peoplecominginandgoingoutofthehotel'sfrontentranceway.Onthesidewalk
in front of the hotel, there was always glitter.
