Robert Campbell left for reasons similar to Dimitri's—heroin and alcohol. He also owed

Robert had started a band with Dee Dee Ramone and assumed that they would make some
money.
ROBERT CAMPBELL
Instead of making me move out of the Chelsea, I'm almost positive Stanley
would have let me move to another room, a room that didn't cost as much. But
I was so full of myself, and so pissed off at everybody at the time, that I left the

have known that in the long run, it would be a good thing to get out.

it was when his girlfriend, Carol, an artist, a painter, moved out on him. I think
she just couldn't take it anymore.
Robert did, on the way out, receive a little token of help from an unexpected source.

When I finally ran out of money at the end, before I got kicked out of the
Chelsea, Lena gave me a five-pound tub of peanut butter. She also gave me a big
old hunk of government cheese—it weighed like ten pounds. That was when the
government started giving out tons of cheese to poor people. Lena was cool. I'll
tell you what, though, you wouldn't want to screw with her because one hit from
her and your neck would be broken.
It's not all hard luck. Painter John Zinsser moved out for benign, even normal reasons.
JOHN ZINSSER
We moved out just to have children. My wife was a little bit creeped out at the
thought of having kids at the Chelsea, and we would have had to expand, which
would've been expensive.
