It's probably worth noting that none of our protagonists departed the Chelsea Hotelunder
themostgenialcircumstances.Somewerepressuredout—directlyorindirectlybyStan-
leyBard.Othersdepartedafterplummetingsofarintodrugoralcoholabusethatstaying
at the Chelsea—which would supply their vices in spades—guaranteed breakdown or
death. Still others departed because of people they had soured on: spouses, lovers, friends,
roommates, people whose traits, once so attractive, now repulsed. Pretty much like our nor-
mal lives outside the Chelsea, but in more concentrated doses.
No matter how unpleasantly they left the Chelsea, every one of them had fond feelings
for the old hotel. Most even managed to preserve some warm feelings toward Stanley Bard,
even if they were still a little afraid of him.
