Neicy: Edie's Ghost?
Neicy, the pouty punk with whom bellman Paul Volmer shared a complicated relationship,
managed to get herself known around the Chelsea. Sometimes she caused trouble indirec-
tly—it was Neicy whom Marlowe tried to date before he fell offthe fire escape. Other times
she caused trouble straight on. The fact that she was beautiful didn't help.
PAUL VOLMER
A lot of people, the punks, would come to the Chelsea to see Sid Vicious's old
room. My ex-girlfriend was one of them. We called her Neicy, a nickname taken
from Denise. When she first came to the hotel from Philadelphia, I didn't know
her yet, and I thought she was just one of these punks from out of town. She was
wearingtornfishnetsandstilettoheelsandaleatherskirtandbustier,elbow-length
blackgloves,andherhairwasallteasedup.Andblacklipstick.Shewasverysexy
and beautiful. But I was very cynical at the time. Some of the punks who visited
Sid's room were real punks and others were just having a little fashion show.
SoIwasloungingovertothesideandIaskedher.“Oh,whatareyou,aposeur
or the real thing?”
And she said, “Fuck you.” Which was kind of punk. They were into “fuck
you” and spitting and being ornery. Because of that “Fuck you” I immediately fell
in love with her and let her stay with me in my room.
Punks came to the Chelsea from all over. These were the alienated kids from
all over the country, and Sid Vicious' room was sort of a shrine to them. They'd
come to the front desk and ask “Where's Sid's room?” The desk clerks would
brush them off and say, “It's not there anymore. We've changed things around.”
And in fact they had made the room into part of a suite, but of course the room
was still there!
So Neicy wanted to see Sid's room. She knocked on the door with her friend.
She was eighteen, and had all of this kind of sexy punk style, but she actually had
this cute little bubbly personality.
When she came to the door, she said, “Oh! Oh! This is Sid's room! I see it!”
Of course the guy who had rented the suite was not aware that he had rented Sid's
room, but because she was so cute and young and charming, he let her in. She ran
into the bathroom, because that's where Nancy died. And she was looking at the
walls.
