To the Manner Born: Suzanne Bartsch
Imperious Suzanne Bartsch isahigh-class event planner, knowninNewYorkcircles forthe

underworld. Some of her best underground friends were the Club Kids, who have their own
sordid story.

Suzanne Bartsh lived in the room across from Robert and Carol's room. She is
from Switzerland and has been a mover and shaker for years in New York, was
giving some of the finest parties at bars and night clubs. She was the ultimate pur-
veyor of camp. You would often see her leaving the Chelsea with a teddy bear
backpack and twelve-inch, layered, stacked tennis shoes, which were her trade-
mark. You wondered how the hell she walked on them.
Suzanne Bartsch's young, nubile boyfriend, was a party boy a male femme
fatale named Ty Basset of the Basset furniture fortune. Ty was a very good look-
ing, nice guy, a mover and shaker on the party scene, just post-Studio 54 and pre-
Club Kids 111 scene, the ravers who ran around with lollipops in their mouth, or
pacifiers, so you couldn't tell they were on Ecstasy, grinding their teeth.
She left Ty and married David Barton, who owns the David Barton gyms.
She lived at the Chelsea then, and there were always a lot of the early drag
queens coming and going from her apartment—RuPaul, the Lady Bunny, Lahoma
Van Zandt, Her Royal Highness Princess Leila Scheherazade Dovima Stratavaria
Zoraya—that whole scene.

these “freaks,” at least by Time-Warner standards. And then corporations would
also call her in to throw a “New York” party, a straight party for straight people.
She traversed both worlds.
JOHN ZINSSER
When we were in 725, our neighbor was Suzanne Bartsch. She had this corner
apartment that was adjacent to ours. She wanted to take over our apartment as a
nursery for their child.
She kept phoning me over and over, saying in this vampy voice of hers, “I
vahnt your apahtment.”
