Viva la Viva Redux!
A sure way to earn status as Chelsea royalty came from being part of Andy Warhol's scene
inthe60s.Viva,mentionedearlierforhernotoriousverbalbrawlswithStanleyBard,starred
in several of Warhol's films, and was lead actress in one.
MARLOWE WEST
Viva had a big, beautiful apartment. She was nice to me—she'd say “Hi” to me in
the hall or in the elevator. I went to her place once, it was very nice, with big high
ceilings.
STEVE HOUSE
She used to come out of her room in a vodka haze with her paisley bathrobe on,
and say in this whispery voice, “Hey. The music's too loud out here.” And she'd
run back into her apartment. She seemed like she was on acid! She was the trippi-
est bird I've ever met!
PAUL VOLMER
Viva had a young daughter named Gaby who was so cute. Gaby grew up there
ever since she was a baby, and when I knew her, she was a little girl. And there
were a few other people who had their Bohemian kids living in the hotel.
ELLIS DUNCAN
Gaby, Viva's daughter, was an interesting little girl. 103 Very, very bright—she was
twenty-five at the age of eight. She could be very full of herself. I used to see her
playing board games with other children in the lobby, and if it looked like she was
going to lose the game, she would suddenly change the rules. The Chelsea Hotel
was her babysitter. Her mother evidently never feared for her. Everybody kind of
knew Gaby. You'd see her in the elevator, running up and down the steps. The
hotel was her playground. She was to the Chelsea what Eloise was to the Plaza.
She was precocious, very self-assured. I'm not surprised that she went on to do as
well as she did in TV and Hollywood.
