Lady Madonna
Madonna never lived at the Chelsea, but she used it for some shots in her notorious black-
and-white photo book, Sex, done with photographer Steven Meisel, which featured her
scantily clad, if at all. When it was released in 1992, she was at the pinnacle of her career
and the sleek book—bound in an aluminum cover—got a lot of press. Much was negative,
since the topic was provocative and people already either loved Madonna or hated her.

When Madonna was shooting that Sex photo book, my friend Alan Cohen called
me on the house phone and said, “Get over here—let's see if Madonna's over
here.”
I didn't give a rat's ass about Madonna, but I said, “Okay, Alan, cool.”
So I was hanging out with Alan, watching Madonna down the hall. Madonna
stopped the shoot and came up to us. She had this long, black leather Nazi coat on
and a leather Nazi hat. She came up to us and said, “Oh, excuse me. Could you all
move? Cause you're going to end up in the shot.”
She was just matter of fact about it—she wasn't bitchy at
