actually wrote about being put off by Harry Smith's appearance and the whole
black magic thing he had going.
DAVID LAWTON
When Harry Smith died, someone asked Herbert Huncke to write something for
his memorial. The piece he wrote is now in the Herbert Huncke Reader. The
funny thing is, it's all about how Herbert didn't know Harry. It's an interesting
reflection of how authentic Huncke was that he didn't want to mislead his read-
ers or listeners.
In the memorial, “Thanksgiving, 1991: Harry Smith,” Huncke writes with characteristic
candor: “To speak honestly—I didn't respond comfortably to his personality. His appear-
ance made me feel skeptical of his trustworthiness … on the other hand… I did not wish
him despair or pain, and certainly not death.”
