phone and just chat with them for her own amusement. With the phone lines in
thehotel,youcouldcallfromroomtoroomusingjustafour-digitnumber,soshe
would call different rooms randomly to chat with people. One time she had been
on the phone for about ten minutes, and she was talking in a very flirty way.
“Who are you talking to?” I asked her.
“Virgil Thomson!”
I was shocked. He was such an eminent person. “Oh, you shouldn't talk to
him!” And I got her off the phone. But it was probably the most fun that he had
in a long time. I should have let them gab.
ROBERT CAMPBELL
After Thomson died in 1989, the guy who ended up moving into Virgil Thom-
son's Chelsea apartment was the artist Phillip Taaffe. He went to Sotheby's or
Christie's auction house and bought all of Virgil's old furniture back. In his car-
pet, there were indentations where Virgil's furniture had been sitting. So Taaffe
brought every piece of the old furniture back and put everything right back in
those same dimples.
