was Puerto Rican Cuban. We went and got some coke from some Spanish guys.
He went and got his dope, and I was doing something else. And then the police
camearoundandwehadbecoolandwait.Whenthecopsweregone,Iwentback
and got the dope. I came back downtown and I was sick. I had to shoot up, and
I had mixed the heroin with the coke. And the heroin was bunk. Jerry Agony got
good heroin and I got bullshit because I didn't speak Spanish. You'd have to be
a junkie to understand, but when you're sick on heroin, and then you shoot up
coke by itself while you're going through heroin withdrawal, it's the worst thing
you could possibly imagine. It was snowing outside, it was miserable, I didn't
know what to do, I was out of money, I was sick, I was paranoid, my heart was
racing, and I went up and knocked on Marty Matz's door. I never did that sort of
thing—Inevermadeahabitofgoingtootherpeopletocop.AndMartysaid,“No
problem.” He gave me a hundred bucks. This is the kind of thing you remember!
He was such a good man.
JAMES RASIN
Lately, I noticed they put the plaque out there on the front of the Chelsea for
the filmmaker Shirley Clarke, and I noticed there aren't too many spots left for
plaques! But there should be a group plaque for all the Beat people who lived
here—you could knock off ten or fifteen people on one plaque. Some friends of
minewho'vebeenlivinghereforalongtimesaid,“JustgotalktoStanley.Ifyou
canraisethemoneytodoit,he'dprobablyputitup.”ButI'msurprisedsomeone
hasn't done it.
