the right surroundings, without a pipe and an opium den in a Hill Tribe village.
I don't think too many people in New York sit around with an opium pipe. So
there wasn't a big market of people who were curious.

I would try to sell it on the street, and people thought I was full of shit. We actu-
ally ended up selling a bunch of it to a rock band, whose name I won't mention.
Then we only had a quarter of the opium remaining.
Poor Marty had thought we would make a couple hundred thousand dollars
out of his smuggling enterprise. But we just went through the opium and ended

Because Marty couldn't sell the opium, he ended up giving a lot of it away. So
he would mix it with alcohol and drink it, or people would just eat it. And for the
people who were junkies, opium wasn't strong enough to satisfy them. If they
were desperate, Marty might give them a chunk and it would keep them from
getting sick.
Dee Dee Ramone was living next door to Marty. When Marty got the opium,
Dee Dee came around a lot! He knew that Marty was pretty cool, and Dee Dee
especially enjoyed the times when he and Marty were alone together. Dee Dee
didn't really like to hang out with a bigger group of people. But Marty had no
idea who Dee Dee Ramone was! He had never even heard of the Ramones—he
just knew that this guy Dee Dee lived next door, and he liked him.

they got high, and Dee Dee finally left. A bunch of other people had dropped by
too, and the next morning when Marty woke up, he saw that someone had left
their leather jacket at his place. He said, “Wow, who left that jacket here? Maybe
it was Dee Dee.” He got on the phone and called Dee Dee's room.
“Dee Dee, this is Marty. You left your leather jacket here.”
Dee Dee said, “You have my leather jacket and you're actually going to give
it back to me?” Dee Dee was so shocked that someone wouldn't rip off a leather
jacket that had belonged to one of the Ramones!
“Well of course!” Marty said. “What else would I do with your leather jack-
et?”
Dee Dee was so blown away by this, and Marty felt so bad for Dee Dee.
