In-Depth Information
out of his way to be kind to people you normally wouldn't look at twice. Huncke
was a good man. I think he was actually a great man.
DAVID LAWTON
I wrote a spoken word poem about Huncke. One of the lines says, “He owes
me sixty dollars for the rest of eternity.” One day in the lobby, Herbert had ap-
proached me and said, “Hey, can you help me out?” I thought, well, of course. I
think it was the only time he ever asked me for money, other then ten bucks here
or a beer there.
It's a simple little poem:
Inspiration to the Beats
Patron saint of the streets
Turned Burroughs onto smack
Once did the nasty with Jack
Huncke the Junkie.
I would have described him as elfin
But he would have slapped me silly
He was the consummate hustler
But he counseled me to be more trusting
Europeans lined up to kiss his ass
While he said he was “No big deal.”
Huncke the Junkie.
He did whatever shit he wanted until the end
I couldn't have been prouder to call him my friend
Street people showed him respect
When he walked around the city
He owes me sixty dollars for the rest of eternity
Huncke the Junkie! 62
