Star Power
JAMES RASIN
Sometimes I would go visit Huncke during the late afternoon. Herbert loved visit-
ors.
He would say, “Guess who was sitting right there where you're sitting yes-
terday! Tatum O'Neal 58 was sitting right there! “ Our friend Edgar Oliver 59 had
brought Tatum over.
Or when I showed up, Huncke would be sitting there and watching Saved by
the Bell! He'd sit there goofing or getting stoned with a big smile on his face, “Oh
those kids, they're so clean cut and well-dressed!” Here's this old Beat guy sitting
in this basement apartment watching this horrible show on late afternoon TV, this
show about plastic kids in California. “Oh, they're so great “
PAUL VOLMER
In her memoir A Paper Life, Tatum O'Neal makes it sound like Herbert Huncke
was an evil guy, the worst drug loser ever. Her portrayal of him was so negative.
But I knew Huncke, and he was such a sweet guy. I mean Tatum went and hung
out with Huncke on her own volition—it's a free country, right? But she makes
believe that it was his evil that sucked her into her own bad ways.
