DATA LITERACY QuIZ
During an interview you can ask potential team members about their data
fluency. Most will respond that they are comfortable working with data. A
more effective interview might include a data fluency quiz. The following is
a sample quiz for you to use or build upon:
1. Ms. Smith received the following scores on a recent student formative
assessment (scale: 1 to 20):
15, 14, 14, 18, 15, 17, 14, 15, 15, 14, 17, 16, 14, 15, 18, 19, 2
Which measure of central tendency should Ms. Smith use to summarize
these grades?
a. Mean
b. Median
c. Mode
d. Standard deviation
e. None of the above
Answer: b. Median is not influenced by the outlier value of 2 like mean is;
there are multiple modes. Standard deviation is not a measure of central
tendency.
2. A group of students are taking a new survey called StudentView about
their teachers. The survey is administered three times during the school
year. The students consistently rate their teachers with similar scores on
the StudentView each time; however, these scores are different than scores
the same teachers received on another student survey that is known to
accurately describe their performance. You would most likely conclude
that StudentView is which of the following?
a. Not a valid or reliable survey
b. A valid but not a reliable survey
c. A reliable but not a valid survey
d. A valid and reliable survey
e. None of the above
Answer: c. Reliability relates to the consistency of the results. In this case,
StudentView yields a similar or consistent result with each administration.
However, StudentView does not seem to be an accurate measure of teacher
performance, as measured by the other student survey.
