believes that random factors influence development either before or shortly
after fertilization. The interactions between environmental and genetic fac-
tors are complex. Genetic makeup and environmental conditions influence
behavior. In subsequent chapters in this topic, the interactions of genetics
and environment will be discussed in greater detail.
CONCLUSIONS
There is a complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors
which determines how an animal will behave. The animal's temperament is
influenced by both genetics and learning. Another principle to remember
is that changes in one trait, such as temperament, can have unexpected
effects on other apparently unrelated traits. Overselection for a single trait
may result in undesirable changes in behavioral and physical traits.
