FIGURE 4.3 Hair whorl height is related to temperament in cattle. This animal has a hair
whorl in the middle position between the eyes. Cattle with a spiral hair whorl below the eyes
tend to be calmer.
FIGURE 4.4 This steer has a hair whorl above the eyes and this is related to a more reactive
temperament. Since the late 1990s, American beef producers have selected cattle for a calmer
temperament. Today it is harder to find beef cattle with a hair whorl high above the eyes.
