(iii) Drying in vials at ambient temperatures and reduced pressure is
likely to yield transparent (invisible) product films, a distinct
marketing disadvantage.
To the author's knowledge, the evaporative drying alternative is still
waiting to be exploited on a commercial scale by the pharmaceutical
industry. The reasons for this conservatism are several and may be
mainly related to questions of safety and regulatory requirements. This
is understandable but it should not deter processors of solid-state
pharmaceuticals from a study of the technology. There can be little
doubt that large scale freeze-drying, as currently practised, must even-
tually give way to more efficient and economic means of water removal.
