Calke Abbey — A Fascinating Un -stately Manor
The whole park was a complete shambles — it had never been stocked properly for
many, many years and it was just a shambles…and I hoped to restore it back to it's
former glory… but of course, nobody seemed to know what its former glory was.

During the second half of the 20 th century, hundreds of British stately manor homes were
abandoned, neglected, and fell into disrepair. Many did not survive. Although individuals,
corporations, and organizations such as the National Trust and English Heritage rescued
many of the historic homes that remain today, the restoration and conservation process is a
costly business, beyond the imagination of most visitors.
