Castle Howard's Mausoleum and New River Bridge
photo © Mike Kipling
Located a mile from the house, the imposing Mausoleum is a focal point in Castle
Howards expansive landscape. Designed in the late 1720s by Nicholas Hawksmoor, the
genius architect and student of Christopher Wren, it took nearly 12 years to complete the
domed Greek structure with pillars and frieze. The Mausoleum is the private burial place
of the Howard family.
The Temple of the Four Winds is located on the grounds at the end of the terrace. This
domed pavilion with four Ionic porticos was architect and playwright John Vanbrugh's
last work, designed in 1724. In 2001, the Honorable Simon Howard chose the Temple for
the site of his wedding ceremony.
Other fascinating follies and monuments scattered over the landscape park and woods in-
clude the Pyramid, Carrmire Gate, the Obelisk, the Four Faces statue, Gate House and the
Lost Temple of Venus.
