Petworth's 3 rd Earl was known for his love of (many) women and his love of art. The
Earl's romantic encounters have faded into quirky legend, but his gift to the art world re-
mains a national treasure. In his role as patron of the arts, the Earl frequently hosted
renowned landscape artist J. M. Turner at Petworth, providing him a studio above the
chapel.
