Who built it…who owns it
Although parts of Combe House may date back to the early 15 th century, the house was re-
built in the 1500s by the Beaumont/Bodrugens family—including the original Great Hall
and rooms above it that exist today. In the 1600s, the property was sold to Nicholas Putt,
whose descendents owned the Estate for more than 200 years. In the 1700s, Tom Putt built
Beech Walk, Bellevue and created the terraced gardens at Combe.
The Marker family inherited the Estate in the mid-19 th century and it remains in their
family today. In 1968, the family determined Combe House was too expensive to run as a
family home and it became one of England's first country house hotels. Ken and Ruth
Hunt are the current custodians of Combe House and they have dedicated many years to
restoring and renovating the property.
