Who built it…who owns it
Henry Hoare II and Henry Flitcroft designed and created Stourhead's naturalistic English
landscape gardens between 1741 and 1765. The Obelisk, the focal point of the terrace
walk, was erected in 1746. The buildings and bridges in the garden are neoclassical and
the set-piece views involve layers of visual, literary and personal allusion. For example,
one of Stourhead's principle picturesque views reflects a painting by Claude Lorrain:
