In-Depth Information
today is almost like sneaking a peek at the great lady's house while she's out for the day.
This spectacular place is still alive with the spirit of its most celebrated owner, whose zest
for life and vivacious sparkle made for a whirlwind of weekend parties and the odd spot
of romance. However, not everyone was charmed by Mrs. Greville. Politician Harold
Nicholson allegedly described her as “a fat slug filled with venom.”
The pet cemetery where Mrs. Greville buried her beloved dogs, complete with headstones
and heartfelt epitaphs, is quite unique. Determined to have a lasting presence at Polesden
Lacey, the lady of the manor is buried nearby.
While you're at Polesden Lacey, be sure to meander through the sumptuous Edwardian
rose garden and the iris and lavender gardens. Indulge in a game of billiards on Mrs. Gre-
ville's billiard table, just as her guests would have done. And play a game of clock golf on
the Theatre Lawn.
