Who built it…who owns it
Ludwig Messel, a wealthy stockbroker from Germany, bought Nymans in 1890 for his
home. He created a wonderful garden featuring magnolias, camellias, rhododendron and
heather on the 600-acre estate. Work on the estate was continued by his son, Leonard
Messel, who collected rare plants and installed them at Nymans. He also replaced the Re-
gency house with a picturesque stone manor designed by Sir Walter Tapper in a late Goth-
ic/Tudor style. Leonard lived in the house with his family until the disastrous fire in 1947.
