In-Depth Information
In the late 1700s, owner Sir John Griffin (later 1 st Baron Braybrooke) made significant
changes to Audley End. He hired landscape master Capability Brown to transform the
parkland, and architect Robert Adam to upgrade the mansion's main level. Richard
Grifffin-Neville, 3 rd Baron Braybrooke used some of his fortune to add fine art and fur-
nishings in the early 1800s.
Audley End was used by British and Polish special forces during World War II. After the
war, the 9 th Lord Braybrooke sold the house to the British government in 1948, and it was
turned over to English Heritage.
