Blenheim Palace — If You Only Have Time For One
At Blenheim I took two very important decisions: to be born and to marry. I am hap-
pily content with the decisions I took on both occasions.

The year is 1704. What can a nobleman do to earn the absolute gratitude of England's
Queen Anne? Why, defeat the French, of course. That's exactly what John Churchill did,
and Blenheim Palace was his reward. Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, received
the Royal Manor of Woodstock and the Queen's promise to pay for the construction of
Blenheim Palace. After falling out of royal favor and being sent into exile, the Duke and
Duchess of Marlborough eventually completed the palace at their own expense. In the
years that followed, his descendants surrounded Blenheim with some of the country's most
fantastic gardens.
