In-Depth Information
land is not the only thing that has fallen at Cliveden. This is the setting for one the most
notorious spy scandals in British history. Poolside at Cliveden is where British War Minis-
ter John Profumo met and fell for Christine Keeler, allegedly a prostitute and girlfriend of a
Russian spy. The resulting scandal brought down the government of Prime Minister Harold
Macmillan in 1963.
Today, it's easy to fall for Cliveden — the grounds and gardens are seductive and the house
is operated as a luxury hotel.
