A BSTRACT
The need for survivability in optical networks is becoming more and more important
because of the huge amount of aggregated traffic carried in an optical network. The main
purpose of protection schemes proposed for mesh networks is to provide a network that
can restore a failure quickly and efficiently via an automated system. Protection schemes
can be divided into two main groups: path-based protection and link-based protection. In
this chapter, we review and compare the basic protection schemes, unicast protection
schemes and multicast protections schemes proposed for optical networks with the mesh
topology. The schemes are compared with respect to different parameters such as
network complexity and blocking percentage.
