What was it Mark Twain said? “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by
the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail
away from the safe harbor…Explore. Dream. Discover.” Setting off can be both intimidat-
ing and exhilarating. Life aboard a moving, heeling home takes some getting used to, but
once you've settled in, you may never want to head back to land. While there's a lot to
learn and consider, there's also something supremely satisfying about a life lived in touch
with nature, the elements, and the cycle of seasons.
We start with a chapter on Radio Nets for both safety and companionship on the high seas.
Then we continue on to weather and forecasting resources, celestial navigation, and man-
aging solar power. Then we'll move from the deck into the galley and suggest convenience
foods for the offshore sailor. Finally, we have a chapter on working while sailing to provide
examples of people whose professions support all or part of the cruising lifestyle. Read it to
judge whether working pays off - in more ways than one!
